Important concerns to consider when Calibrating Laboratory Instruments
Calibration intervals of laboratory instrumentation and the accuracy will depend on factors such as the working conditions, care and frequency of use. Thus the recalibration should be performed after such a period to insure the accuracy of the instruments remains within the desired limits.
All laboratories should carry out internal calibrations as well as getting an Accredited Laboratory to carry out external calibrations. The calibration intervals normally range from 3 months to a maximum of 1 year. An external calibration laboratory should be able to make adjustments to the instrument to bring the instrument within manufactures tolerance, or the customers required tolerance. Equally important is the preventative maintenance of the instrument .Using a balance as an example, customers should check that the calibration laboratory is able to carry out the service on the balance prior to the final calibration and able to make the necessary adjustments on the balance. Servicing of a balance can often affect the accuracy with regards to the linearity, repeatability and the long term life span of the balance costing the customer unnecessary repair/replacement costs . Typically on an analytical balance the internal calibration weight needs to be cleaned and often product spillage that has worked its way into the electronics and weighing mechanism needs to be removed.
The same principle of service and calibration applies to the many sensitive laboratory instruments. Customers should check the technical abilities and measurement capabilities of the external calibration laboratories prior to having instruments calibrated. Although the calibration laboratory should advise when an instrument is nearing its tolerance limits, the customer should always check the calibration certificate supplied, as in many cases the results may fall outside the customer’s requirements.
